Background:

Pakistan still has a window of opportunity to act decisively to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS., Pakistan runs the risk of experiencing the rapid increase in HIV/AIDS among vulnerable groups experienced ever. In these vulnerable the youth is much more at risk to be infected through the most dangerous epidemic HIV. Similarly the youth are more at risk in the low prevalence province or cities where there is the lack of social, economical and educational activities which in turn need to be focused in earlier response.

Youth at this stage of life are in more complicated situation in which they experience the biological , psychological and physical changes tasking place inside the body which ultimately developing several internal forces. If in this critical stage of life, the youth are not concentrated and understood realistically for their fundamental needs and rights, the youth will sooner be contacted with social issues as indicating and experiencing with social issues in our country. As result today the youth is considered to be the most vulnerable group in getting HIV and AIDS.

Balochistan AIDS Network is working under PNAC consortia and a network of local NGOs at provincial level with particular focus to cope with rapid increase of HIV and AIDS. Therefore, BAN conducted a seminar with the collaboration of Heaven Society member of BAN to mainly focuse the youth on HIV and AIDS prevention. Preferably the seminar conducted and designed more on youth in which the youth delivered their speeches on a subject youth and HIV and AIDS. In addition, youth also presented the skits and drama reflecting on HIV and AIDS as to leave a message to the masses that how youth get indulged in HIV and AIDS. The masses also sensitized about the initiatives and measures taken on HIV and AIDS by different non governmental organizations in their focused areas of intervention and what extent they caused changes in the lives of the beneficiaries. The seminar was designed in way to be widely more informative and sensitive in nature to disseminate set of targets and objectives to the audience and participants of the seminar.

Objective of Seminar:

1. To transfer the HIV related knowledge among the youth who are most at the risk in Quetta.
2. To indulge youth themselves in HIV activities directly as to learn by expressing their views on the issue through interactive activities.
3. To boost HIV and AIDS informative activities through interactive learning methodology by the youth as to fully comprehend the issue.
4. To increase awareness on HIV and AIDS and sensitize the youth at grass root level.

Preliminary session:

Registration: Before the seminar formally started, the process of registration was carried out in order to register all the participants and guests in the seminar. The registration was carried out by Mr. Faheem and Ms. Naira from BAN and registered all the participants and guests all together from Heaven Society and NGOs. The participants encompass children, youth, parents and officials from different organization to be beneficial from seminar. There were almost 200 guests participated in the seminar.

Recitation of the holly Quaran: As soon as the guest seated on chair, the seminar was formally commenced with the name of Allah. By following this virtue one of the participants was invited to recite few versus of the holly Quaran to formally initiate the sessions of seminar. Well come address : After the recitation of holly Quaran , Ms. Aneeta Finance Manager of BAN put some light over the importance of seminar, that this seminar specifically designed to target and benefit the youth and aware them about the fatal disease that rapidly increasing in all over the world. She also emphasized the participants particularly the youth of the seminar to spread the gained information around the world. The seminar was totally focused on youth and their presentation and speeches on HIV and AIDS information. She said that it was very imperative to discuss the issue timely with youth and sensitize them regarding its sensitivity and high risk it carries.

She also briefed about the project and its cooperation with Heaven Society and told the audience that BAN is working under the consortia of PNAC and it has built a network in which there are 47 member organizations in all over Balochistan working against HIV and AIDS. BAN financially supported Heaven Society as to organize a one day seminar on” HIV and AIDS and Youth”. This seminar is also reflecting international youth day which was observed on 12th August 2007.

Rules and Regulation and Seminar format: Before starting the speeches of the seminar by the students of heaven society, the audiences and the participants were briefed about the rules and regulations and the format of the seminar. The participants were told that each speech would be entertained up to four minutes, and there would be no paper reading while delivering the speech. If any one reading from the paper the judges would have authority to disqualify the participant from the round. The audiences were also told that seminar would be comprised of two session’s one speech and skits by the students and the second session would be based on speeches by the related officials on HIV and AIDS from different organizations.

Seminar Sessions

This session was commenced by delivering the speeches prepared by young youth students of the Heaven Society Organization to highlight particularly the HIV and AIDS and its prevention, which are as follows:


Speeches:

Heaven Society primarily deals in the field of education and has set up educational institution to promote the young by imparting English language and computer short courses. In addition, children are also in focused to educate them in them in morning at primary level.

Heaven Society seeks help and coordination from different NGOs and institutions to run educational and promotional program to beneficiaries particularly the young. In this regard, BAN provided an opportunity and a plate form to Heaven Society as to not only promote the performance of such young individuals in particular field of education and extra curriculum activities but also enhance awareness regarding HIV as to curb it from the most high risk vulnerable group of the society particularly in Balochistan.

In this context, special speeches were prepared by the students focusing on HIV and Youth in different classes of language. The speeches were differently prepared as per different classes which were covering different dimensions of the issue which are as follows:

• What are HIV and AIDS and its treatment?
• How is HIV transmitted and not transmitted?
• Phases of HIV and AIDS and its infection?

The first above mentioned speech was for the students of level one and level two and the second speech was given to level three and level four to be prepared and third speech was allotted to level five and advance classes to be delivered in speech contest.

The first speech was delivered by six students from level one and level two indicating the general information was being disseminated to the target group in which there were number of children and their family members were sitting in the hall. It was wonderful performance e by the youngest students of the institute by highlighting the issue convincingly. The audience very much like it and applauded them for their better performance.

The second speech contest was among the level three and level four students in which five participants took part and delivered their speeches. The participants basically were refocusing the youth and their attitudes with particular reference to HIV transmission. This session aggressively attracted the attention of the audience as to objectively sensitize them on HIV and AIDS.

The third speech was delivered by four students of level five and advance classes. This speech was also very much of the view that the students delivered the speeches were tremendous and using very productive and motivating contents of the subject for the purpose of masses awareness and sensitization on HIV and AIDS. These students were also applauded by the audience for their fascinating performance.

Skits and Drama:

The seminar also encompassed the skits and drama which were based on HIV and AIDS. These skits were beautifully conceived and composed indicating HIV positives characters, discrimination and stigma in our society that an effected person is facing. The purpose of showing skits was to entertain and highlight major dimensions of HIV and AIDS to the target group as to address these problems on priority bases. The effort made by the students and the administration to take such initiative in composing the ideas reflecting the issue. It was such a fast reaching medium of source which can be proved quiet convincing for the audience.


Songs:

In seminar, for the entertainment of the audience so that they may not be exhausted, some of very influencing songs were sung by the students on the stage. The very cute children were also participating by dancing on songs in seminar to appreciate and encourage the children in seminar. These songs were shown in between speech competition to avoid boring the audience. For better and beautiful performance these children were also appreciated by the audiences.


Speeches by special guests:

To give more value and weight to the seminar, some of the guests from development sector were also invited to express their views on the subject HIV and AIDS and the youth. The speeches delivered by the guests are as follows:

Speech by Abebe Abbera:

Mr. Abbers was from UNHCR working as a health Coordinator delivered his speech on the alarming and pandemic HIV and AIDS in Pakistan. He expressed that how important it is to promote 5the HIV and AIDS in term of curbing and coping it in Pakistan. He further expressed that there is only one to be saved from this plague is to care in life. It is silent destructive and devastating storm which is rapidly spreading in all over the world particularly in developing countries by mentioning some of the important figure that highlighted its serious manner. He also stressed upon the youth that youth is future mason of the country and must be aware of the HIV and AIDS. He also names the medicines that prolong the life of effected person which recently discovered.

In addition, Mr. Abbers appreciated and like it very much that the initiatives taken by the organizers of the seminar is a bold step towards the increase in awareness regarding HIV and AIDS in our society and these sort of promoting program should always be constantly organized in Blaochistan to stop HIV spreading. In the end he tanked the BAN staff for providing an opportunity to speak on the occasion.

Speech by Sirbuland Jogazai:

Chairman BAN Mr. Sirbuland Jogazai also spoke on the occasion that the seminar was organized by the Heaven Society with close collaboration of BAN aimed at targeting the youth with particular reference to HIV and AIDS. He said that BAN in this connection is always in front position to cooperate and coordinate with other organizations at advocacy level so that this pandemic and fatal disease may be objectively highlighted in Blochistan. He further explained the and shared the steps taken by the BAN in Blaochistan for the last three years in the field of social development sector for the betterment of the masses. He also assured any assistance from the BAN in future as it has been in constant efforts and strives to curb and cope with the issue of HIV and AIDS.

In the end of the speech, he thanked and congratulates the organizers of the seminar that the seminar was beautifully conceived and composed.


Speech by the Chief Guest:

Sardar Munir Ahmad Khan Tajak was the chief guest of the seminar. He also spoke on the awareness raising importance regarding HIV and AIDS in Pakistan that it is need of time that every one should take his responsibility to fight against HIV and AIDS. He said that more programs like this should be organized by different organizations working on HIV and aids particularly the Government should be having the leading role as they are having more funds then any other.

In addition, he also appreciated the performance shown by the young students both in speeches and skits based on HIV and AIDS. He also thanked the Director of Heaven Society and BAN for their integration and coordination on mutual understanding for stopping HIV and AIDS in Balochstan.

Prize Distribution:

At the end of the seminar, the winners of speeches and skits were distributed among all participants. For this the chief guest and Chair man BAN were requested to formally present the trophies and shields to each participant.

Apart from this, the Chief Guest and Chairman BAN were also presented with shields by the Director of Heaven Society.

Musical Show:

At the end of seminar, musical show was presented to the audience. The singers and vocalist performed beautifully by singing some famous local songs which really put new color in seminar. The students enjoyed a lot the musical show.

VOTE OF THANKS:

The Director Heaven Society formally presented his vote of thanks to all the guest and participants for giving their valuable time for the seminar. He also encouraged the participants to participate more actively in debate and other contest of the institute in future.
